What qualifies a person for the gastric balloon?
The gastric balloon is for adults who are suffering from obesity and have not been able to lose weight and keep it off. To receive a gastric balloon, you must be willing to follow a healthy diet and exercise lifestyle. The program begins with the use of the gastric balloon and a healthy diet and exercise program for six months. That is followed by six more months of a healthy diet and exercise program without the gastric balloon in your stomach.
Persons with severe damage to the liver or who have been told their stomach empties food slowly (gastroparesis) may not be candidates for this procedure. Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding is not a candidate for this procedure.
How much weight can I expect to lose?
In the FDA-approved study, patients, on average, lost 3x the weight of diet or exercise, or about 10% of their total body weight.
How long can I keep the gastric balloon in place?
When you schedule the gastric balloon procedure, you will also be scheduled for its removal six months after insertion. Prolonged gastric balloon placement may increase the risk of the balloon deflating, leading to surgery on your bowels to remove it.
What is a typical diet after the gastric balloon?
For the first 24 hours after placing the balloon, you will be on a clear liquid diet. In the first week, you will be on a high-protein liquid diet. At week 2, you can start eating soft foods, focusing on a high-protein, low-carb diet.
