What is Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy is a weight loss procedure that significantly reduces the size of the stomach, therefore limiting the amount of food that a patient can consume. Sometimes known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure alters the size of the stomach by using a stapling device to create a thin "sleeve," about the size of a banana. The remaining area of the stomach, about 70 to 80 percent of the stomach's original size, is removed from the body. Therefore, unlike gastric bypass surgery, sleeve gastrectomy is completely non-reversible. In addition, unlike gastric bypass surgery, this bariatric procedure is absorptive, meaning the body is able to digest and absorb food and nutrients after surgery.

Some of the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy include:

  • On average, 50 percent of excess weight is lost within 3 years
  • Health improvements, including decreased instances of Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and sleep apnea
  • Fast recovery due to use of the minimally-invasive, laparoscopic method
  • Increased physical activity and overall quality of life

How Does Sleeve Gastrectomy Work?

The goal of sleeve gastrectomy is to decrease the size of the stomach so patients feel full sooner, and consequently consume fewer calories per day. Considerably reducing the amount of food that a patient takes in can help him or her lose a significant amount of weight over time.

During sleeve gastrectomy, which typically lasts anywhere from one to three hours, Dr. Tersigni will use a device known as a laparoscope, a tiny surgical camera, to see inside the stomach. After making a few small incisions across the abdomen, he will insert the laparoscope so that he can perform the procedure via monitor. He will then use thin surgical instruments to remove a large portion of the stomach. The remaining area is stapled together into a slim, vertical shape. The procedure is complete after Dr. Tersigni closes the initial incisions.

While the use of a laparoscope makes sleeve gastrectomy less invasive than some alternative treatments, it usually takes patients about two weeks to recover from the procedure. Following this recovery period, patients will find that they are no longer able to consume large amounts of food. It is important for patients to follow all post-operative instructions, and begin a healthy diet and exercise regimen in order to reduce the risk of complications.

Is Sleeve Gastrectomy Right for You?

At Bay Bariatrics, our goal is to ensure the health and well-being of all of our patients. During an initial consultation on the sleeve gastrectomy procedure at our office serving Portland and communities throughout Oregon, Dr. Tersigni will evaluate your condition and determine your candidacy for treatment. This may include a physical exam, as well as blood tests and tests for other medical problems. In most cases, you must have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or more, typically about 100 pounds over your recommended weight, to be a candidate for the procedure. If you are unable to undergo alternative forms of weight loss surgery, Dr. Tersigni may recommend sleeve gastrectomy as a viable option.

It is also important that you have a full understanding of the procedure. Dr. Tersigni will work with you to make sure you are aware of the magnitude of the decision to undergo sleeve gastrectomy. The sleeve gastrectomy procedure should not be considered a quick and easy solution to weight loss - it is a surgical treatment that poses some inherent risks, and it is not reversible. In fact, the procedure requires a lifetime commitment to healthy diet and lifestyle habits.

Dr. Tersigni and his friendly staff are available to answer any of your questions and concerns regarding surgery and post-operative care. We also encourage you to discuss treatment with family, friends, or former patients, who can offer you support in your decision.
